The horrifying events that occurred along the New Jersey shoreline in the summer of 1916 are widely regarded as the true inspiration behind Peter Benchley's critically acclaimed JAWS. The coastline was packed with thousands of tourists looking to beat the record temperatures and enjoy the summer sun, but their peaceful reveling would be shattered by a series of five shark attacks which killed four people within twelve days.
